Semester Two 2024 - "Anthology"

Our second major concert for 2024 featured poetry set to music, in particular Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's incredible setting of Hiawatha's Wedding Feast (words by Longfellow).

We remembered Elspeth Sutherland, who has had a long history with QUMS as a member, a guest soloist, and who has twice served as our Musical Director in 2004-05 and in 2015-18. It is under her leadership that QUMS first performed "Stars"  (text Sara Teasdale, music Eriks Ešenvalds) in 2017. It was in her memory that we performed the song to open the concert.

Alessio Emanuale, a poet and UQ student, joined us to present several of his original poems.

The afternoon also saw a small orchestra performing, comprised of a mix of QUMSians and non-QUMSian UQ students. We thank Lexie Nash for instigating this initiative and we wish the orchestra every success.

Kevin Gomez joined us as tenor soloist for Hiawatha, with Guillaume Lemay-Yates conducting and Christian Gante accompanying the choir from the piano.
